Fuel contaminated with water, regardless of whether it's petrol or diesel, is usually an important condition to deal with in a motor vehicle - especially in modern common-rail engines. Water in the petrol or diesel will likely cause idling difficulties, lumpy running, increased smoke and, if not addressed fully, oftentimes ruined injectors.
